The earliest documented use of makeup was in ancient Egypt around 6,000 BCE. The evolution of makeup has come a long way. In the Elizabethan Era women used a toxic blend of lead and white vinegar to achieve the famous look of the ultra-pale skin. In the 1920’s women used petroleum jelly mixed with coal or soot to create darker, fuller lashes. I’ll skip giving you the visual of makeup in the 80’s, however the 80’s is an important era for makeup. In the late 1980’s makeup artists first started to think about the ingredients in their makeup.
One pioneer in this makeup revolution is Rose Marie Swift, creator of RMS Makeup. Rose Marie was a celebrity makeup artist for decades. In her 30’s she started seeing a decline in her health. Through many tests doctors discovered a large array of toxic chemicals and heavy metals in her system. Her doctor told her he had seen lab work like this before, all within women working in the beauty industry. She immediately knew these toxic chemicals in her system were attributed to the beauty products she was using on herself and clients every day.
Almost immediately she began researching how to develop cleaner cosmetics. In 2004 Rose Marie created a website called Beauty Truth that exposed some of the myths and ingredients in cosmetics. She continued to do makeup, while experimenting with raw ingredients to make skin care and cosmetics that were as pure as possible. We now know that what we put on our skin can be absorbed into the skin and in some circumstances get into the blood stream.
Rose Marie was determined to make a cream based cosmetic line focusing on using organic, non-toxic ingredients to create makeup and skin care items that are safe and effective. Another bonus: RMS packaging is all eco-friendly.
