IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

How Does It Work?

When you are exposed to intense heat or UVA/UVB light, your skin typically develops more dark spots and/or red vessels. Often patients have many layers of brown pigment or several red vessels under their skin that they have accumulated over time. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser is a collection of different wavelengths of light, some of which are attracted to dark pigment, and some attracted to small blood vessels. When the light energy is directed at one of these targets, the target closest to the surface of the skin absorbs the energy and it is destroyed.

The IPL laser treatment targets brown spots created by sun exposure and red vessels, resulting in a more even skin tone. IPL requires minimal downtime and is well-tolerated.

Patients who wish to have a reduction in brown spots and/or red vessels on their face and are at their lightest skin tone are best candidates. It is important to not get direct sun exposure, use a tanning bed, or apply self-tanner a month before and after the treatment to ensure the safest treatment. You should not have an IPL if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
