Can You Benefit from Laser Hair Removal?

laser hair removal

If you are getting fed up using messy creams and razors along with uncomfortable waxing and plucking, maybe it’s time you join the millions of Americans who are benefiting from laser hair removal. Here are a few things for you to understand before you begin a laser hair removal course.

How the Treatment Works

Laser hair removal is done by focusing light energy to the hair follicle beneath the skin and the hair’s pigment will absorb this energy which destroys the follicle stopping any future growth. The hair follicle needs to be intact for this to work which is why one needs to avoid waxing, tweezing and any hair removal creams six weeks before your first treatment so that the hair follicles are not disturbed. Shaving is no problem one to two days before your appointment because this doesn’t disturb the follicles.

Things to Avoid

If you are having your underarms treated don’t use any perfumed products, including deodorants. In addition, avoid topical creams and acne treatments if your facial areas are to be treated. Avoid hot showers, saunas and hot tubs for at least 24 hours after each treatment. We may recommend soothing creams and moisturizers to use after the treatment. You should apply sunscreen if you go outdoors even if it is cloudy.

Tanning will interfere with laser hair removal and make it less effective and can cause discoloration of the skin. Not only should the sun be avoided but all sprays and creams or tanning beds should not be used two weeks before each treatment.

Multiple Treatments May Be Needed

More than one laser hair removal treatment is typically required to see results. This is because your hair grows in a cycle of three stages—growth, transitional and resting. Laser hair removal is most effective on follicles that are in the growth phase which explains why a series of treatments will be needed to achieve the desired level of hair reduction.

For the best results, it’s important to follow your treatment schedule. Everyone is different, and your treatment plan will depend on your skin tone and the color and coarseness of your hair and the area being targeted. To get a sense of what will be the best laser hair removal treatment for you, the professionals at Nicole Norris MD Medical Spa in Peru would be happy to speak with you.
